Japanese Pork Rice Bowl – Butadon (豚丼の作り方)

Japanese Pork Rice Bowl or Butadon is another quick and easy recipe great for a busy weeknight.

Similar to the Japanese Beef Bowl, Gyudon, and Japanese Chicken Bowl, Oyakodon, this rice bowl is made of pork instead.

Pork belly or pork shoulder is much preferred because it’s a fattier meat and yields a more moist texture and flavor. If you want leaner meat for a heart-healthy diet, try using pork sirloin which is drier and tougher. Since it’s drier, you will need to use slightly more cooking oil or use some water to cook yellow onion.

This dish tastes more refreshing with some shredded veggies such as cabbage, lettuce or kale. And you can sprinkle some shredded green onion and Japanese seven flavor chili power to enhance the flavor. Try it and see for yourself!

Ingredients

  • 1/2 lb of pork belly
  • 1/2 large yellow onion
  • Cabbage
  • Cooked rice
  • 1/2 tsp of grated ginger
  • 1/2 tsp of grated garlic
  • 1 tsp of sugar
  • 2 tsp of mirin
  • 2 tsp of sake
  • 1-1/2 to 2 tbsp. of soy sauce
  • 1-1/2 tbsp. of cooking oil

Japanese Pork Rice Bowl - Butadon (豚丼の作り方)

Ingredients

  • 1/2 lb pork belly
  • 1/2 large yellow onion
  • cabbage
  • cooked rice
  • 1/2 tsp grated ginger
  • 1/2 tsp grated garlic
  • 1 tsp sugar
  • 2 tsp mirin
  • 2 tsp sake
  • 1-1/2 to 2 tbsp soy sauce
  • 1-1/2 tbsp cooking oil

Instructions

Prepare the ingredients

  • 1)

    Grate the ginger and garlic

  • 2)

    Rinse and thinly slice the cabbage

  • 3)

    Thinly slice half of the onion

  • 4)

    Cut the sliced pork belly into fourth

Marinate pork belly

  • 1)

    In a mixing bowl, add the pork belly, 1/2 tsp of grated ginger, 1/2 tsp of grated garlic, 1 and ½ tbsp of soy sauce, 1 tsp of sugar, 2 tsp of mirin, 2 tsp of sake. Mix everything together and let it sit for about 10 to 15 minutes

Cook the pork bell

  • 1)

    Add 1-1/2 tbsp of cooking to a pan. Saute yellow onion until it’s soft and fragrant.

  • 2)

    Next, add the marinated pork belly and cook until the pork is no longer pink. Turn off the heat when the pork is fully cooked.

Serve butadon

  • 1)

    To serve, first, place cabbage on top of a bed of cooked rice. Next, fill the bowl with pork belly.

  • 2)

    You can also add finely chopped green onion and sprinkle some Japanese 7-flavor chilly powder to enhance the flavor of butadon.
